What Is The Process Involved In Gestational Surrogacy?

Gestational Surrogacy is an arrangement in which a woman carries the embryo in her womb, full term for the other woman who for some reason is not capable of doing the same. The woman who carries the pregnancy is called Gestational Carrier and the one for whom she carries is known as an Intended Parent. This process is carried out through IVF (In Vitro Fertilization). Here, the carrier is not genetically related to the baby that she carries in her womb as the eggs from the intended mother or the donor are fertilized and combined with the sperms of the intended father or the donor outside, in a lab conditions to form an embryo and then this embryo is implanted in a surrogate’s uterus. These Gestational Surrogates need to undergo blood tests, which apart from investigating regular things are also done to rule out any communicable diseases. They are also screened for mental or genetic illness. Looking at the complications that can lead to conflicting situation between the surrogate and the intended parents, it is the best option to approach a Surrogacy Agency which is ready to take the responsibility of the entire procedure without adding to any stress. Rather it is quite a relief that this agency will handle legal, medical and travel arrangements. Apart from this, they counsel the intended parents and the surrogate from time to time making them aware of the potential risks involved.

gestational surrogacy process

The gestational surrogacy process has to go through the following steps:

• Finding a surrogate: If you are not going to ask your friend or a relative to be your surrogate then it is better to go through a surrogacy agency as they have a ready database of potential surrogates. The task becomes easier as this database has been made only after initial screening of these women.

• Counselling by the agency: Once the surrogate is matched with prospective parents, they are guided of the procedure, its complications and risks. Potential parents can choose from the list of fertility clinics for the process to begin.

• Medical investigation of the intended parents: The intended parents need to go through medical examination if they are using their own eggs and sperms, so that it is ensured that they are fit enough to go through IVF process.

• Medical examination for the surrogate: She too has to be screened for medical fitness through medical tests. Her being healthy is of utmost importance.

• Legal Document to be signed: The legal agreement drawn between the surrogate and intended parents has to be signed by both the parties but both the parties have to be represented by separate attorneys. This is to ensure that their interests are not violated by the other party.

• The IVF process begins: After synchronizing of surrogate’s and intended mother’s menstrual cycle( in case of fresh eggs retrieval) the retrieved eggs are fertilized and then combined with intended father’s sperms to form an embryo, which is eventually implanted in the surrogate’s uterus. It may take three to four IVF cycles before the pregnancy is achieved.
